Why I am second guessing becoming a lawyer

I have wanted to be a lawyer for quite some time. Recently, however, I have experienced something that has really started to make me second guess my decision.

Anyone who knows me knows that my wife almost died last year after having her gall bladder removed. In
the end she was in ICU for about a week and still has some pain/complications from the whole scenario. My wife missed close to 6 months of work and I missed about 1 month of law school and took a major hit on my GPA. We missed our son's 6th birthday. If it hadn't been for 2 good friends, my son would not have had any positive memories from his birthday.

There were many things that led to this and we knew/know something wasn't right so we got a lawyer. I called around the area where I live and no attorney would take it because of who the surgeon is. It is an extremley close "good ol' boy" network around here. So had to call the Metro East to find a lawyer. We were signed by one lawyer who decided to run for judge. Then, following the previous lawyers advice, we went to another lawyer who signed us. He told us that he submitted our case to an expert who immediately stated that we have a legitimate claim. He had our case/files for approximately 8 months.

We received a letter the other day stating that neither he or his law firm would represent us any further. When I called to inquire why I received this letter, I am told that his decision was based upon his opinion that we would not received more than 500k in damages. He still maintained that we had a case, but doesn't want to represent us.

We have since alled 4 other attorneys and noone will represent us because (1)other lawyers have been involved and they don't want to take on another lawyer's mess; and (2)the statute of limitations will run next januarary. To make matters wors, 2 of the lawyers I called are graduates of the same law school that I go to.

This has got me thinking that maybe being a lawyer isn't right for me. I thought that it was about helping people but have come to realize that for most, it is about becoming wealthy. Remember, we have NEVER been told that we don't have a claim. Quite the opposite, we have been told several times that we do have a claim, but we just can't get someone to represent us. With all of the firvilous claims being filed and litigated, it amazes me that we can't get a valid claim filed. Whatever happened to the lawyers that were there to help people?

Greetings Blawg world, I am McLeod's Law. I am a 2L at Southern Illinois University. I have a wonderful job clerking for the judges in the local county courthouse. This Blawg is dedicated to talking about, well, basically anything I want. Because I have started dedicating my time to getting ready to apply for the JAG Corps. This blawg will also discuss what I have to go through in order achieve my goal of becoming a JAG lawyer.

I just couldn't resist the urge to start a blawg that I might actually keep going. I had attempted to keep the world up to date on my life as a 1L, then I realized that A) noone would really care how hard my first year was, and B) there was no way I was going to be able to keep up a blawg and keep up my studies.
